Kalavryta weekend getaway: a 2-day itinerary

Book

Two days are enough to discover the heart of Kalavryta: history, gorges, caves and mountain air. This itinerary starts and ends at the Wild & Warm apartment in the town centre, so every evening you come back to a fireplace with a view of Mount Helmos.

Day 1: The town, the rack railway and history

Morning: the Odontotos through the Vouraikos Gorge

The Odontotos station is only around 60 m from the apartment. The historic rack railway connects Kalavryta with Diakofto through the Vouraikos Gorge, a journey of about 45 minutes that is memorable in every season. Check the timetable before you set off.

Midday: the Holocaust Museum

Back in town, walk about 5 minutes to the Municipal Museum of the Kalavryta Holocaust. Housed in the former primary school, it commemorates the massacre of December 1943 — a visit that helps you understand this place deeply.

Afternoon: Agia Lavra

Around 7 km from town lies the historic Agia Lavra Monastery, closely associated with the Greek War of Independence of 1821. It is a short, peaceful drive before heading back for a warm evening at home.

Day 2: Caves, monasteries and water

Morning: Cave of the Lakes

Head to the Cave of the Lakes near Kastria, around 16.5 km away. It is known for its thirteen successive underground lakes, a sight that delights children and adults alike.

Midday: Planitero

Continue to Planitero, around 25 km from Kalavryta, known for its plane-tree forest and the springs of the Aroanios River. It is a lovely spot for an easy walk by the water and a lunch break.

Afternoon: Mega Spilaio

On the way back, Mega Spilaio Monastery, around 11 km from town, is built against a steep rock face above the Vouraikos valley. Its view is the perfect way to close the weekend.

In winter: a day at the ski centre

From December to April you can swap the second day for skiing or snowboarding at the Kalavryta Ski Centre on Mount Helmos, around 15 km by road. Read more in our Kalavryta in winter guide and check access and winter equipment requirements before leaving.
