Athens to Kalavryta: how to get there

Book

Kalavryta is one of the easiest mountain destinations to reach from Athens. In this guide you will find the driving route, the rack railway alternative and everything you need to know about parking near the Wild & Warm apartment.

By car from Athens

By car, take the Athens–Corinth–Patras motorway and turn towards Kalavryta at Diakofto, continuing on the mountain road. Allow roughly 2.5–3 hours, depending on traffic, stops and weather.

Tips for the drive

The final stretch is a mountain road, so give yourself a little extra time and take it easy. In winter, check road conditions and winter equipment requirements before leaving. Kalavryta sits at 735 m, and the weather can be very different from Athens.

When to arrive

Check-in at the apartment is from 15:00 to 23:00. Please tell us your expected arrival time when booking so we can be ready for you.

The alternative: the rack railway from Diakofto

If you would like the journey itself to be part of the experience, you can travel to Diakofto and ride up to Kalavryta on the historic Odontotos rack railway. The route runs through the Vouraikos Gorge and takes about 45 minutes — by road, Diakofto is around 22 km from Kalavryta.

From the station to the apartment

The Kalavryta rack railway station is only around 60 m from the apartment, so you are there on foot in a minute, even with luggage. Check the train timetable before planning your trip.

Parking in Kalavryta

Free street parking is available in the surrounding blocks, subject to availability and local signs. There is no reserved private parking space. Because the apartment is in the centre, once the car is parked you can walk everywhere: the pedestrian street, the cafés and the Holocaust Museum.

Why the journey is worth it

Kalavryta is a mountain destination for every season: skiing in winter, hiking in spring and cool air in summer. Close to town you will find the Cave of the Lakes with its thirteen underground lakes, around 16.5 km away, Mega Spilaio Monastery, around 11 km, and historic Agia Lavra, around 7 km. The Kalavryta Ski Centre is around 15 km by road, and Planitero with the springs of the Aroanios River around 25 km.

Once you arrive

Light the fireplace — firewood is included in the price — and enjoy the view of Mount Helmos. For the days ahead, see our 2-day Kalavryta weekend itinerary or the winter guide, and read the frequently asked questions for check-in and check-out times.
